former Director of Music - St Mary's Cathedral Choir
David Russell joined St Mary's Cathedral Choir in 1953. He remained
connected with the Choir until 2008, serving as Director of Music for the
last 33 years. David trained at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and
has been intensely involved in the Music Education of young children. He
has also lectured in Music Education at University level. His research
has included performing editions of the music of one of his predecessors,
John Albert Delany. Whose Mass in A flat people have dubbed. Australia's
missing nineteenth century opera.
His work with the Cathedral Choir includes several overseas tours, which
gained a reputation for the Cathedral music on an international front.
The Choir toured United States, Germany, France, Rome, Belgium, and Monaco.
He has gained a reputation as a skilled trainer of children's voices. David's
musical accomplishments were recognized by Pope John Paul II. In 1993
he created him a Papal Knight of the order of Saint Sylvester.
The music
of St Mary's Cathedral Choir has been released on many Compact
Disks.
